Per jaar belanden er maar liefst 4,5 biljoen sigarettenpeuken (dat is 4.500.000.000.000!) in de natuur. Dat is zo’n 75% van het totaal aantal verkochte sigaretten. Bij schoonmaakacties op het strand staan peuken met stip op 1 bij de meest gevonden voorwerpen.

Veel mensen denken dat sigarettenfilters biologisch afbreekbaar zijn. Niets is minder waar. Dieren (en zelfs kleine kinderen) lopen het risico om te stikken in de peuken. Bovendien bevatten veel filters celluloseacetaat (plastic), arseen (rattengif!), lood en pesticiden. Zodra een filter uit elkaar valt (bijvoorbeeld doordat het in contact komt met zeewater) sijpelen die chemicaliën dus het water of de grond in.

Tijd dus om in actie te komen. Sara (beter bekend als Saar van Groen met Saar) en Nathalie (beter bekend als Nati van  My Happy Footprint) gaan voor de tweede keer deze zomer op peukenjacht en roepen jou op om mee te gaan!

Op maandag 16 september starten we vanaf De Pier en lopen we richting de Scheveningse Haven. Onderweg speuren we naar achtergebleven filters en rapen we ze op. Aan het einde van de peukenjacht leveren we alles wat we gevonden hebben in bij TrashUre Hunt.

Each year, an estimated 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are littered (that’s 4.500.000.000.000!). This is about 75% of all the cigarettes consumed. At beach clean-ups, cigarette butts are the number 1 found item.

Many people are under the assumption that cigarette butts are biodegradable, which is NOT true. They are dangerous for animals and small children, who risk choking if they accidentally swallow one of the filters. The majority of the filters contain cellulose acetate (plastic), arsenic (rat poison!), lead and pesticides. As soon as a filter starts to decompose (for example after getting in contact with water), harmful chemicals enter into our soil and/or water systems. Time to take a stand against cigarette butts! Sara (better known as Saar from Groen met Saar) and Nati (better known as Nati from My Happy Footprint) are going on a cigarette butt hunt for the second time this summer and they are asking you to join!

On Monday, September 16th, we’ll start at the Pier and walk towards the harbour of Scheveningen, collecting littered cigarette filters. At the end of our cigarette butt hunt, we’ll hand in everything we’ve found at TrashUre Hunt.
